WHAT CAN I EXPECT FOR MY FIRST SESSION?
When you come in for your first session we will go over your health history before beginning hands on work. I also conduct an assessment based in Chinese medicine theory if you are interested in receiving Shiatsu. After we've talked about your goals and concerns then we will begin the session. If you are receiving massage therapy with oils then I will leave the room while you undress and lay down on the table. I will knock before re-entering to ensure you are ready and covered up beneath the sheets and blanket. If you are receiving Shiatsu then you will lay down on the table wearing comfortable, stretchy clothing. I will always ask for consent before beginning the session and communicate throughout to make sure you are comfortable, feel safe and that we are meeting your goals for the session. When the session is over I will leave the room so you can change into your clothing and in order to give you a few minutes in silence to relax. We then chat for a few minutes to assess how you are feeling. Payment and re-scheduling are the last things we do.
SHOULD I TIP?
Tipping is never expected. I'd prefer you use the extra money to come in for sessions as often as you need. If you do choose to tip then know that it will expand my ability to offer reduced rate services to those in need.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MASSAGE & SHIATSU?
Massage therapy is usually applied directly to the skin using an oil or lotion and involves a lot of long gliding techniques. The focus tends to be on anatomical precision for the treatment of pain and stress. Shiatsu is a massage form that came from Japan in the early 1900's and developed from a long lineage of traditional East Asian medicine. The techniques are informed by Acupuncture & East Asian medicine but also incorporate modern Anatomy. Shiatsu is usually applied through clothing and is often done on a low wide table or mat on the floor. Stretches are also a part of the treatment and you will find that it is rhythmic with lots of direct pressure rather than flowing and gliding as a massage is. Both can be used for pain and relaxation. I love them both!
WHAT IF THE PRESSURE IS TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?
Communication during our session is so important. I want to know if the pressure isn't exactly right! To help you in communicating your needs, I will check in and ask in a variety of ways during our session to find out if you need more or less pressure. I know it can be hard to ask for what you need, but if it helps please know this: I want to know and will adjust pressure a thousand times during the session in order to get it right .
DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?
Health insurance does not cover massage or Shiatsu in Minnesota at this time. Still, it can be worth discussing coverage with your provider in case they offer re-imbursement. Many clients pay using an HSA account. I provide receipts for documentation if needed. Car insurance and Worker's Comp insurance often cover massage therapy in the case of a motor vehicle accident or a work related accident. I bill at a different rate for this service and require a prescription from a provider so please contact me if you need care following a car or work accident.
DO YOU OFFER REDUCED RATE OR SLIDING SCALE PAYMENT OPTIONS?
I do offer reduced rate and sliding scale sessions. My equity pricing is offered in an effort to make access to massage and Shiatsu more equitable. People in need are able to receive services with me at a reduced rate. Please contact me before booking if you would like to set up reduced rates for your next session.
